Eyeweb: 2002 to 2022: The journey of a creative talent now transforming the web for business

Guest Interview •  Spring 2022

Y&H was delighted to sit down and chat with Paul Scott, Managing Director of Eyeweb, one of the Humber’s most solid and exciting web and marketing agencies with over 250 customers, about their recent 20-year milestone in business and what lies ahead.

Tell us about the early days of Eyeweb Paul.

After working in London for a few years over the millenium, I returned to my home-town and started Eyeweb with my friend Shane from a small office corner in Kirk Ella. Using our collective experience, myself in production and Shane in sales, we grew the business and expanded into our first dedicated office in Hessle. As the years passed, I found my feet in being client-facing and responsible for the delivery of our services, and around ten years ago I bought out the other partners and took Eyeweb on by myself. Since our inception, we’ve had five different brands and five different office locations and are now settled in our wonderful studio with amazing views over the River Humber.

What do you feel has been the catalyst for your success?

There are two essential aspects of how we have come to today. First is our approach to working with our clients, which remains vital to our future growth. We create bespoke solutions unique to their business model and target audience. Our expertise in branding and marketing backs this up. The second is our people. Having the right people with you on this journey is essential, and I pride myself on the team currently in place and how we support each other and work together.

Tell us about the Eyeweb team, Paul.

There is me, of course, and then Chris heads up our design and branding, and he’s been with me since 2014. Shaun is our Digital Marketing lead and brought us a strong agency background. Kate is our content specialist, and Tyler manages our social media. We also have my Mum (Sylvia) in accounts, our development team and not forgetting Duggie, my occasional office-based dog!

It feels like you are very a friendly and tight team?

Yes, we’re like one big happy family. Every team member is crucial and always involved in the day-to-day running of the business and our projects. We socialise a lot together, and whenever we push a new website live, we will play footgolf or go bowling. We’ve also done 24 hour gaming events, and we had a big celebration with a meal for our recent 20th anniversary.

You’ve been in the business for 20 years; which bits do you enjoy the most?

I love the variety that the business brings. No two days are the same. In one day we can work on a small brochure site, create a reporting system for a big manufacturer or market an app. I have always been hands-on and treat all clients/projects equally, no matter the size. We are in the process of bringing in an Account Handler to the business to bolster that support and ensure our service remains of the highest quality as we grow. We created a website to celebrate our 20 years > 2002.eyeweb.co.uk

And what do you get up to in your free time?

Along with my wife, two daughters and my dog Duggie, I have a couple of passions/businesses that I run in addition to Eyeweb. I run an annual VW Festival with my friend Shane who started Eyeweb with me. This runs every year at Harewood House in Leeds and is attended by around 20,000 people. I am also involved in KUHAC Roadrunners and am currently organising the second South Cave 10km event, with 750 spaces for runners to join this year. I am also fascinated with 3D printing and making and selling items on my Etsy store.

What are your plans for the next year for Eyeweb?

We’ve got a strategy for 2022 that involves growing the business with more significant development projects that help companies handle processes online. We have worked with Dutch Imports to help them bar code scan and track their stock online, and most recently, with Chaucer Foods, we have developed a production line monitoring system (EyeWorks) to help them manage equipment uptime and maintenance. We specialise in working to our client’s unique needs and see this as a critical growth area. I also want to use the anniversary to help share our story and raise our voice in the area. We get involved in many interesting projects and have a great story to tell. I am looking forward to growing the team and working with more interesting businesses in the area.
