Charting a Rewarding Career Pathway with Smailes Goldie Group

Headline Partner •  Summer 2023

The demand for trusted business advisors, tax advisors, and chartered accountants has never been greater. At Smailes Goldie Group, we aspire to be a brilliant choice for individuals seeking a rewarding career in accountancy. Jamie Chilcott, a Partner here, shares his journey to inspire those considering a similar path.

Beginning his career at Smailes Goldie Group as an audit and accounts trainee in July 2013, Jamie embarked on a journey that saw him transform from a trainee to a Partner within ten years.

By successfully navigating through ACA exams and gaining practical experience, he earned his credentials as a Chartered Accountant in December 2016. This achievement paved the way for promotions, first to supervisor and then to manager. Importantly, this journey kindled an interest in Corporate Finance in Jamie, equipping him to manage a diverse portfolio of clients, spanning from SMEs to corporates across a multitude of sectors. By 2022, Jamie had stepped into the role of Associate Partner, a testament to the growth opportunities at the Group.

Jamie was initially drawn towards accountancy because of his affinity for numbers and a keen interest in business and finance. It was through a friend and current colleague, Alex Berridge, that he became acquainted with Smailes Goldie Group. Jamie found that the firm’s esteemed reputation for training and development strongly echoed with his career aspirations.

The role of a Partner at Smailes Goldie Group offers diverse and rewarding experiences. For Jamie, the technical aspects and problem-solving elements form the backbone of his role. However, what he finds most satisfying is interacting with clients and offering effective solutions to their challenges. He finds that each day presents fresh opportunities – responding to new enquiries, keeping abreast of technical advancements, brainstorming with his team, or meeting and advising clients, thus ensuring a vibrant and stimulating work environment.

In his leisure time, Jamie enjoys playing golf and attending live events, all whilst balancing his responsibilities as a father to two young children. This work-life balance highlights the supportive environment that Smailes Goldie Group nurtures for its team.

As a Partner, Jamie looks forward to forging new connections and fortifying existing business relationships with clients in the local community. He intends to build on relationships within his team and with a network of professionals in the area, reflecting the firm’s emphasis on cultivating strong professional ties.

Joining Smailes Goldie Group as a trainee is not just about securing a job, but embarking on a rewarding career. The firm’s ethos of nurturing talent and its commitment to continuous professional development make it an ideal platform for ambitious individuals like Jamie. Smailes Goldie Group is more than a workplace; it is a place to grow, flourish and realise your potential, just as Jamie has. With the right amount of dedication, the sky is the limit.

In conclusion, Jamie’s journey at the Smailes Goldie Group showcases the robust training, ample growth opportunities, and the fulfilling professional life that awaits those who join the firm as trainees. His journey serves as an inspiring narrative for anyone eyeing a successful career in accountancy.
