In today’s competitive job market, finding the right candidates with the necessary skills and passion for a specific industry can be a challenging task for employers. Recognising this need, The Deep worked in collaboration with Hull College on an innovative Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP).
The SWAP initiative was specifically designed to address the staffing needs of The Deep’s Food & Beverage department while providing invaluable opportunities to job seekers aspiring to build their careers in the dynamic and rewarding hospitality industry. With the objective of recruiting individuals who possess a genuine passion for this sector, Hull College and The Deep came together to establish The Deep Academy.
The Deep Academy implemented a comprehensive and immersive training programme, tailored to the specific requirements of the Food & Beverage department at what is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world. Over the course of a week, expert staff from Hull College imparted essential catering skills and knowledge to job seekers, focusing on the unique context of The Deep.
The participants were equipped with the necessary tools to excel in their roles, gaining insights into the intricacies of working within the catering arm in the spectacular aquarium environment.
The success of the SWAP initiative has been evident from the off through the recruitment of two talented crew members from the very first course back in 2021, with subsequent courses also yielding further new employees for the conservation and education charity. These individuals, carefully selected from the pool of participants who completed the training programme, have seamlessly integrated into the vibrant and fast-paced environment of The Deep. Their exceptional performance and dedication have not only strengthened the Food & Beverage department, but also demonstrated the effectiveness of the SWAP model.
The collaboration between Hull College and The Deep now extends beyond the immediate benefits of recruitment. It embodies a strategic partnership that fosters mutual growth and development. The partnership serves as a powerful example of how collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders can yield positive outcomes for all parties involved.
As a non-profit organisation, The Deep have over 100 staff working on site who require industry related training to remain compliant in regards to legislation. It prides itself on its customer focus and ensuring it provides an enjoyable experience for all of those who visit the much-loved attraction. With that in mind, Hull College is currently working on programmes to deliver training to The Deep’s staff with the following courses in October:
- L2 Team Leading for Line Managers
- L2 Customer Service for Customer Advisors
L3 Leadership and Management for Management Staff
The ongoing collaboration between Hull College and The Deep serves as a shining example of how educational institutions and local businesses can work together to unlock opportunities, nurture talent, and drive success in the ever-evolving landscape of the job market.
